European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
