Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying these medications must be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Users who have stopped the jabs describe a intense return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
